Basic tools for assembly
Zweihaak
- For checking the correct angle when bending the grid.
- For checking the correct distance between the bottom of the gutter and the gutter grid when screwing down.
Grinder with metal disc + safety glasses
- For marking cutting lines when cutting or trimming the grid. This can also be done with metal shears if necessary. With a grinder, it is easier to get a nice straight cut.
- Safety glasses are indispensable when cutting with a grinder due to jumping sparks with pieces of metal.
Sealant gun + High Tack sealant
- For sealing permeable openings in zinc gutters. Sometimes the choice can be made to screw the grating into the zinc if there are no other options. This durable sealant can be used to lubricate the screws all around to prevent water from getting through.
- We recommend a transparent sealant.
2x Wooden trestle
Here we mount a wooden worktop for bending
the grid.
- It is important that these be made of wood since we are screwing the top on.
MDF worktop 1100x750x18 mm
We mount these with screws to the trestles for a
stable surface.
A ladder, scaffold or spider tracked aerial platform
- Reaching the gutter often requires a ladder, scaffolding or spider crawler boom lift.
The materials you need
Gutter grid AP77, AP55 and AP23
- Fits all types of gutters.
- For deviating wide gutters, it is possible to install the grates broaden with a second grid. These can be installed with stainless steel screws or pop rivets. connected.
The materials you need
Stainless steel mounting clip X77
- For securing grid AP77 to the gutter. This only works for gutters with a standard common round bead of 20 mm.
- Not suitable for the AP23 gutter grid.
- There are two slots in the AP77 gutter grating where the clips fit.
- For all other gutters without a 20 mm round bead, the grating can be fastened with stainless steel screws or self-tapping screws.
- The clip can be loosened with a flat screwdriver.
The materials you need
We mount these at the ends of the gutter to seal gaps between the gutter grid and the bead of the gutter
sealing.
The materials you need
- For mounting gutter grids together.
- For mounting the grating to the bead of the gutter.
- First, pre-drill with a 3.3 mm spiral drill bit.
- Use common rivet pliers.
Tip. Remove the rivet by drilling into it.
The materials you need
Stainless steel screws 3.5 x 20 mm T15 TORX
- For assembling the gratings together.
- For mounting the end profile L77 to the grille.
- For mounting the grating to the bead of the gutter.
- For mounting the gutter grid to the first tile batten.
- First, drill a hole in the bead of the gutter and in the end profile with a 1 mm drill bit.
Tip. A larger screw size can be used to re-insert mount the same hole.
The materials you need
Self-drilling waterproof stainless steel screws
- For mounting gutter grates to all types of gutters.
- For mounting the end profile L77 to the grille.
- In some situations, first drill a hole in the bead of the gutter with an appropriate drill bit.
Tip. After disassembly, a larger screw gauge can be used to re-insert mount the same hole.
The materials you need
Spring Clamps
- For mounting the grilles AP23.
- Secure the grids to the bead of the gutter.
- Then use the 1 mm drill bit to drill a hole for screwing with the 3.5 x 20 mm screws.
- Or use the 3.3 mm drill bit to drill a hole to mount the grille with rivets.
Assembly Instructions
1. Determine the correct angle with a swath hook
- Bend the grid once, about 1 cm behind the underside of the roof tile.
- Determine the correct angle so that the grating lies horizontally flat and can rest on the lower battens.
- Secure the swath hook in the correct position.
Assembly Instructions
2. Determine the appropriate point on the grid where it should be bent
Measure the distance from the bead to about 1 cm behind the underside
of the roof tile.
Assembly Instructions
3. Bend the grid
- Screw two screws into the table that the grille can be placed against so that it cannot slide any further. See the illustration.
- Place the grille against the two screws and secure the grille with one screw so that it stays tight against the two screws. This ensures that the grid will be bent at exactly the same point each time. See the illustration.
- Bend the grid across the width evenly at three points; left, center and right.
- Place the swath hook in the correct position next to the grid on the table to recreate the correct angle.
- Place the swath hook against the grating at the three points to check the angle and adjust if necessary.
Assembly Instructions
4a. Attach the AP77 or AP55 grating to the gutter
- Secure the grille with the stainless steel mounting clips at a bead 20 mm in diameter.
- The grille can otherwise be mounted with stainless steel screws or pop rivets. Pre-drill with a metal drill bit.
- The grille can otherwise be mounted with a stainless steel screw with sealing ring.
- The grille can be mounted with High Tack adhesive if necessary in case you do not wish to screw. Be sure to degrease these areas first for excellent adhesion.
Assembly Instructions
4b. Attach the AP23 grating to the gutter
- The grille can be mounted with stainless steel screws or pop rivets. Pre-drill with a metal drill bit.
- The grille can otherwise be mounted with a stainless steel screw with sealing ring.
- The grating can optionally be mounted with High Tack adhesive in case you do not wish to drill or screw into your gutter. Be sure to degrease these areas first for excellent adhesion.
Assembly Instructions
4c. Mount the grid
- Set the sweep hook in the correct position so that the grate lies horizontally flat and use it to keep the distance between the grate and the underside of the gutter even each time. See the photo.
- Screw the grating to the lower battens. While screwing the first screw, keep the entire grille as much as possible horizontally even across the width so that the grille will not shift out of position during the next screw.
- Screw the grating to a lower batten with at least 3 screws.
- When installing the LP23 gutter grating, we secure the grating with spring clamp to the bead of the gutter. Then drill two holes per meter in it with the 3.3 or 1 mm spiral drill bit.
- In case the lower battens cannot be reached, it is possible to shorten the grating and place it on the back of the gutter on the tab over the entire width of the gutter. To prevent slumps in this case, a 50 mm diameter tube can be placed under the grate with a screw through the grate from above so that the tube cannot slide away.
- A bulkhead can be made by first cutting a model out of cardboard and making it fit.
Assembly Instructions
5. Assemble the grilles together
- Overlap the gratings by at least 20 mm.
- Screw the grilles together with at least two stainless steel screws using the stainless steel cylinder head 3.5 x 20 mm T15 TORX or pop rivets.
Assembly Instructions
7. Mount the end profile L77
- When mounting the grille, it is important to leave at least 3 millimeters free for the L77 end profile.
- First, measure how long the end profile should be at the corner and cut it to size with metal shears.
- Cut the profile into a proper size and bend it into the proper shape with the combination pliers.
- Screw the profile to the grid with one or two stainless steel screws using the stainless steel cylinder head 3.5 x 20 mm T15 TORX or stainless steel self-tapping screws.
- Make sure all openings at both ends of the gutter are sealed.
What do our customers say?
I like doing this kind of thing myself because then I can be sure it's done neatly. If someone else does it you always have to wait and see what you get.
Having a professional install it is twice as expensive, it is worth the effort to install the grille yourself.
Fortunately, I found a handyman on the Internet because it is too high up on the roof for me.
It is increasingly difficult to find an available professional these days. With a good explanation, the grilles are easy to assemble yourself.
The instructions on the Aluper website helped me a lot because I found it quite difficult at first.
I choose the AP23 gutter grid because it works just as well and is a lot cheaper.
An example
I assembled the grids myself in my spare time at my leisure. Assembly is easy to do yourself. This is the first time, so I'm sure it could be finished nicer in some areas. We are very happy with the result. I am convinced that most people who can do something with their hands can do the assembly just fine by themselves.
